Do You Know What’s Your Identity?

I’m not talking about being a mom, spouse, or brother. Not even your job title.

This is a question James, Clear, author of Atomic Habits, asks us to ponder. He says, “to change your behavior for good, you need to start believing new things about yourself. You need to build identity-based habits.”

Your identity is based on the stories you tell yourself. How often in a day, week, or month, do you tell yourself how good you are at something? Is that even close to the number of times you tell yourself how bad you are at something?

We know the reasons why we do it. It’s messages from childhood that have been repeated so often that we believe them. To create lasting change, it’s important that we start by proclaiming we deserve a new story!

Only when we truly believe that we deserve something better can we weather the inevitable ups and downs that we experience during the process of “becoming.”

As we start 2023, what new, empowering story do you deserve to tell yourself?
